Every now and then, there’s a trend on Twitter that has its participants taking part in the strangest/funniest/stupidest things, all to be a part of the hottest new challenge. (Remember, about a year ago, when everyone was pretending to be mannequins?!)
But occasionally, there comes along a trend that takes hold of the online community and actually has the potential to change people’s lives and relationships for the better – and the latest one comes courtesy of sex and relationships blogger Oloni.
On Thursday night (26th October), she issued a call to action to her dedicated 40,000-strong following, challenging her female readers to switch it up and ask a guy they’ve had their eye on out on a date for a change, and share the response.
Ladies ask that guy you fancy out on a date and tweet me a screen shot of his response. 💁🏾

And happily, it didn’t take long before some adventurous ladies began to shoot their shots – and as it turns out, it worked pretty well!

Of course, not every swing of the bat can equal a home run – sometimes, things didn’t quite go as planned, and the ladies had to be let down gently:

‘I don’t do dates’
And sometimes, the guys were straight up savage with their rejection:

In fact, the #datechallenge became so hot that it got women in relationships asking their significant others out, just for the sake of it!

Of course, you can only really get involved in the challenge if you have someone you’d even want to take on a date… which quite a few women found, they didn’t. *cue awkward emoji*
Ok, I see that everybody here knows someone they like enough to ask for a date… WHILE I STILL DO NOT. 😬 #DateChallenge pic.twitter.com/WJTljKtRXF

And unfortunately, some ladies’ crushes are a little too famous, or too not-single to ask out…
I would but @iJesseWilliams is seeing someone and Jeff Goldblum is married. https://t.co/1CGsil09O2

…but fame didn’t stop a hopeful few women in pursuit of their crushes!
Aite boom @anthonyfjoshua will you go on a date with me? #datechallenge

We spoke to thread starter Oloni to find out why she started this challenge in the first place – and ladies, it was all to get us to start pursuing our dating dreams on our own terms. Not everyday ‘damsel in distress’ – sometimes, go getter!
‘I started the challenge because I wanted to see women go after what they want,’ she explained. ‘It’s nice when guys ask a woman out, but making it clear you’re interested can save you so much time – plus, men can be shy too or lack confidence. When we take that little step, it allows him to meet you half way.
‘Women don’t ask guys out, because we’ve been told that men are ‘hunters’ traditionally. And while that might hold some truth, you can still allow him to do so, even if it means showing an interest first.’
Too right! Women of the internet, it’s time to take matters into our own hands – DM your crush today! The worst they can say is no…
Check out the #datechallenge on Twitter now – and follow @Oloni to keep up to date with the next thread!
