If you’re looking to get the best from a summer holiday, then a trip to the beach can be rewarding for variety of reasons. You’ll get the mental health benefits that come with spending time beside the sea, as well as a chance to rest and relax (or, if you prefer, to try out a variety of outdoor activities).
But exactly which European beach holiday destinations might appeal? Let’s take a look at a handful of the best options.
Puglia, Italy
This region of Italy is at the country’s far south. It’s the heel of the famous ‘boot’ shape, and it’s home to some of the country’s most fabulous and balmy coastal towns. You might take a look at Peschici, in the north, or perhaps Pescoluse, in the south. The former offers whitewashed buildings cascading down the cliffsides, and the nearby Gargano National Park; the latter offers a series of sheltered beds, which sit along the sand. You can expect temperatures here to sit reliably in the mid twenties during summer.
Kefalonia, Greece
This little Greek island is best known for its vibrant villages and beautiful blue-green waters. The largest of the Ionian islands, it offers plenty of distraction away from the beaches, including hiking through the forested uplands. If beaches are your preference, however, you might make a trip to Fteri, which is arguably the most appealing of all the island’s beaches, thanks to its inspiring cliffside location. There’s also the beach at Myrtos, and the towns of Assos and Argostoli, to consider.
Madeira, Portugal
This European archipelago isn’t anywhere near Europe, but it belongs to Portugal as a result of the country’s exploration of the Atlantic during the Age of Discovery. From the summit of the largest island, you can enjoy an amazing view of the sunrise over the Atlantic. There are also plenty of unique distractions around Funchal, including the famous street sledging, as well as stunning beaches in the form of Praia do Seixal and Praia de Machico.
Budva, Montenegro
This gorgeous old town is exceptionally well-preserved, with a marvelous sense of tradition that creeps into every cobbled street and piazza. There are several dozen local beaches to explore. From the Mogren, which is favoured by locals, and the Jaz Beach, which is perfect for those looking for a bar, there’s something for just about everyone. It’s very reasonably priced, too.
