Who knew Mr Obama could hold a note? Definitely not the crowd at Manhattan’s famous Apollo Theatre, that’s for sure!
The US President was on hand for a fundraiser at the venue in New York this past Thursday and stepped up the the podium on stage to congratulate those who had performed at the benefit that night, including legendary R&B singer Reverend Al Green. Apparently acting on a dare from some of his members of staff, Mr Obama stunned guests by thanking Al Green for “warming up” the audience for him and proceeded to belt out the first line of the singer’s hit ‘Let’s Stay Together’ to the roaring approval of the crowd.
Speaking about his impromptu performance, he simply said: “Those guys didn’t think I would do it. I told you I was going to do it!” before adding “Now don’t worry, Rev, I cannot sing like you, but I just wanted to show my appreciation.”
This is not the first time Mr President has incorporated a bit of ‘swag’ into one of his public appearances. Back in 2008 he dismissed his opponents’ smear campaigns by referencing rapper Jay Z’s hit song ‘Dirt Off Your Shoulder’ and also added the accompanying dance move too.
