The Honourable Marcus Garvey Jnr was born in Jamaica on the 17th August 1887 and is one of the most historical remarkable figures in the 20th century. In the 1920’s when the world was a very different place for Black people, Garvey founded and created a global movement for the emancipation and repatriation of all black people to Africa. Garvey was one the earliest exponents of Pan Africanism at a time when Africa was a colonised continent.
To this day he remains a global icon, representing the virtues of represented by unity and economic independence.
In August 1914 he founded the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). The motto of the organisation was “One God one Aim One Destiny”. Garvey was ordained as a prophet by the Rastafari movement and is a national hero in Jamaica.

During a trip to Jamaica, Dr Martin Luther King and his wife Coretta Scott King visited Garvey’s shrine on 20 June 1965 and laid a wreath. In a speech he told the audience that Garvey “was the first man of color to lead and develop a mass movement. He was the first man on a mass scale and level to give millions of Negroes a sense of dignity and destiny. And make the Negro feel he was somebody.”
