The annual street, urban and street dancing celebration has another impressive run
For many, every year the Early May Bank holiday signals an official entry into Summer. Regardless of the weather, there’s something about getting an extra day to lie in and do something other than commute on a Monday.
And for others, it also means an extra something special – the return of Breakin’ Convention! Held at London’s Sadler’s Wells every year, it is a weekend that celebrates all things hip-hop theatre, with performances, workshops, graffiti and DJs. Headed up by Jonzi D, it’s a remarkable exhibition of talent and passion for a genre that is often marginalised.
Though held in north London, Breakin’ Convention regularly brings in people from around the world – audience members, and participants alike! Some of the most crowd rousing performances came from the likes of Korean group Jingo Crew (pictured above), US-born, international dance battler Angyil McNeal, and 16-year-old Logistx of Los Angeles B-Girl scene.
Since launching in 2004, it has built a strong community of dance enthusiasts, and appreciators of hip-hop culture, who desire to see it given the reverence it deserves. It’s an environment that feels inclusive and truly open for all to express themselves – and the more we have of those, the better!
Though the festival is over for 2019, keep your eyes peeled for more from them throughout the year, including professional development projects and further workshops! For more information and highlights, head to the website: www.breakinconvention.com
