Just last week, the long-awaited video to ‘Twerk’, a fun collaboration between City Girls and Cardi B was released. Pre-release, it had already created a lot of excitement and people have really been enjoying it for its unapologetic, energetic booty-shaking – so far, it’s gotten over 24million views (and counting).
But despite heaps of praise, some on the more conservative side of the political spectrum have taken to the keyboard to express their criticisms of the video. One of the responses was on Twitter from Daily Caller columnist, Stephanie Hamill who suggested that the ‘Twerk’ video was harmful to the ‘#MeToo’ movement.
‘In the era of #meToo how exactly does this [music video] empower women?’ Hamill asks. ‘Leftists, @iamcardib, feel free to chime in. THX.’ Considering the #MeToo Movement is about sexual harassment and assault and not about a simple dance move, this stirred up quite a fuss. While some of her followers started debates and discussed the matter, a lot of people found the conservative columnist’s tweet unnecessary and weren’t afraid to let her know in the comments.
However, Cardi didn’t hesitate to clap back at her, and defended the video saying: ‘It says to women that I can wear and not wear whatever I want…NO still means NO.’ She then goes on in the tweet to pose the question to Stephanie: ‘If I twerk and be half naked does that mean I deserve to get raped and molested?’ Well surely, even Stephanie has got to admit: Cardi does have a point. No one deserves to be sexually abused and, the way that they act or dress certainly doesn’t warrant that response either.
Since then, Hamill has responded saying that she agrees that ‘No means No’ but said she feels that videos like Cardi’s sexually objectifies and hurts women. She then invited Cardi B to come onto her show and debate with her. However, the Bronx rap queen didn’t accept this offer and instead responded with another tweet expressing her dismay and described the ‘harassing’ tweets she’s been receiving from conservatives as ‘disgusting’.
You may have noticed that recently on Twitter, Cardi B has had a few negative comments thrown her way; whether that’s about the new ‘Twerk’ video or her expression her views on particular topics. Recently, she posted a viral Instagram video urging people to do something about the government shut down, but ended up getting into a spat with a popular online troll. However, the conversations never last long because this queen knows how to shoot down the haters quicker than you can say ‘Money’ – she told her to calm down as she could easily ‘dog walk’ her. Ouch.
Well, you heard it here first: money and Balenciagas (that look like socks) aren’t the only things that Cardi cares about. She clearly cares about women and she cares about her country. Cardi, keep going – you’re doing great, sweetie.
