We got our first major dose of Cecile Emeke in the summer of 2014 where the London filmmaker and multimedia artist premiered her short film Ackee & Saltfish. The film follows friends Olivia, (Michelle Tiwo) and Rachel, (Vanessa Babirye) on their journey through Dalston High-street. They go out in search of Caribbean cuisine after Rachel forgot to soak the Saltfish. This then blossomed into a hilariously witty web series, but alongside this Cecile has continued to give us the good with the bad and the ugly.
The month of April sees a new release from Cecile’s Strolling web series, a forum that is both raw and honest. In 10-20 minutes the Stroller gives their thoughts on society and how societal issues affect them locally. Cecile gives young black people the opportunity to have their voices heard, with topics ranging from male feminism, to the monarchy, PAKS and gentrification in London. The series, created in the UK has now expanded abroad, with Cecile developing the French equivalent ‘Flâner’. This move exemplifies how such injustices and anxieties are international and should be discussed as if it were so.
