Young Money rapper Drake recently unveiled his latest track –a collaboration with late R&B princess Aaliyah ‘Enough Said’. Needless to say it has recieved a very mixed reception.
With Aaliyah and Drake fans around the globe battling it out online to say their piece, it seems many are not entirely pleased. It’s no secret the admiration that Drake has for the late singer and he’s not shy about expressing it. Not only does the Canadian rapper have an etching of Aaliyah’s face on his back but he recently got “416” tattooed down the side of his ribcage. This is partially a homage to his home town of Toronto but yet another declaration of his love for the late singer, with the ‘4’ only partially shaded so that it also appears to be a ‘1’. Aaliyah’s birthday was 16th January or 1/16.
All of this follows Drake’s announcement that he has plans for an album using Aaliyah’s vocals. Though no one can claim to know how Aaliyah would have felt about the track personally, many have stated that she never would have released the track as is.
Perhaps the issue is particularly uncomfortable for so many people because Drake has released the song in Aaliyah’s name featuring…himself.
Have a listen yourself.
Hate it or love it, Drake is in good company, artists/producers such as P Diddy and Elton John have released tracks using vocals of the deceased, and the reception is often mixed. Although Aaliyah’s family have gone on record saying “There is no official album suported by the family”. Chances are, there will be quite a lot more said on this topic…
