January is miserable. It’s cold, it’s grey and you’re broke after Christmas. But this doesn’t mean you have to wait for payday to have a good time. Here’s Pride’s guide to having a fun January on a shoestring.
It’s a skate-off
Ice-skating is the perfect romantic date for you and the boyf or a good giggle with the girlies. It’s the perfect way to carry on that Christmas vibe. Skating rinks are dotted all over the UK: Somerset House, Salford Ice Rink and Newcastle Outdoor Ice Rink are open until the end of January. With prices ranging from £8 to £12, you won’t have to break the bank to have a good time. But don’t break any bones either! Free haircuts for all
If you can’t stretch to a trim this month, try modelling for your local salon to get your haircut for free. Toni & Guy salons across the country have trainees that advertise on sites like Gumtree.com, as well as in-salon, for volunteers to practise their skills on. This isn’t for the faint-hearted, but you may just get a professional cut and colour for absolutely nothing! It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the risk. www.toniandguy.com
Get some culture
Museums round the country don’t charge to get into their regular exhibitions, which means you can get a shot of culture for free. The British Museum in London has a huge selection of artefacts from Africa and Imperial China; the Burrell Collection in Glasgow has some amazing examples of medieval and Islamic art; and The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is packed with nearly half a million objects. A stroll around your local museum is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon, and it won’t cost you a penny! Check out www.museums.co.uk to find your nearest one.
