Grammy award-winning Esperanza Spalding is making a huge waves in the world of jazz. Spalding was one of the biggest attractions at this year’s prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival, which in the past has attracted names like Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and Ray Charles.
However, the afro-haired singer is probably more widely known for beating favourites Justin Bieber and Drake to the best newcomer Grammy this year. Of her highly praised talents she says: “All it takes is a little practice.” Even US President Barack Obama is a fan, having personally invited her to perform at the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Esperanza Spalding wants to make jazz music for mainstream radio without, as she puts it “sacrificing any of its important elements.”
