Pride speaks to founder of Ezie Designs, Esther Ihezie

Tell me about your latest collection

My latest collection is called Spotted. Despite being drawn to the polka dot fabric, the shapes and patterns also remind me of tribal face paint commonly seen in West Africa. The collection has pieces that make a statement when worn alone or paired with another pieces. It’s fun, flirty with some edge.

How has your heritage influenced your designs?

Growing up with West African Nigerian heritage I was always taught three basic principles – quality, practicality and versatility. These three concepts have influenced my design process tremendously. Whilst designing my collection, I always asked myself are the clothes practical? Can it be dressed up or down for any occasion? Can it be worn with other pieces? And will it elevate my customers’ look whilst celebrating their individuality? Once all these questions were answered confidently, I knew I had created an amazing collection based on the principles taught by my heritage.

What do you think makes you unique to other designers?

My aesthetic, heritage and experiences have all contributed to making me a unique African contemporary designer. However what certainly stands out is the fact that my professional background started in medicine, as I am a practicing ER doctor, which isn’t common at all in the fashion industry.
