FILM INDUSTRY TRAINEE SCHEME OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS

We are looking to recruit ambitious trainees from across the UK who display these attributes:
- Passion for film
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills
- Experience of using Microsoft Office packages and email
- Ability to work as part of a team
- A desire to learn
The scheme aims to recruit a majority of candidates from groups under-represented in the UK film industry: (e.g. cultural, socio-economic and those who consider themselves to be disabled.) This scheme is delivered under section 37 of the Race Relations Act. (Applicants are entitled to decline to share personal information should they wish to do so).

Trainees will undertake an office-based placement in a film distribution or international salesorganisation. As well as gaining hands-on experience of working in the film industry, the trainee placements will be enhanced with regular industry insider training to provide the trainees with a comprehensive overview of the film industry.
What’s involved
- Placements will commence in April 2022 and run until January 2023 (9 months).
- The majority of the placements at distribution and international sales companies will take place in London due to the nature of the film industry,
- Trainees will work fulltime (defined as 35 hours per week) in host companies, and will regularly attend training sessions with the other trainees which will further enhance their employability skills and knowledge of the film industry.
- Trainees will be paid a monthly training allowance equivalent to the London Living Wage
- Trainees will also be entitled to holidays (totalling20days a year pro rata subject to agreement with their host organisation.)
Trainees must…
- Be new entrants to the film industry i.e. not have more than twelve months industry work experience be it continuous or discontinuous / paid or unpaid.
- Be UK residents and eligible to work in the UK.
This scheme is delivered by the Film Distributors’ Association (FDA),the British trade body representing UK companies releasing feature films theatrically in the United Kingdom
Distribution
A film distributor acquires the rights to release a film in a particular territory and is then responsible for the marketing of that film domestically, with the ultimate aim of maximising a film’s commercial potential. Essentially, the role of the distributor is to engage film with audiences. To this end the distribution company will:
- Set a release date for the film;
- Decide the method by which the film is to be exhibited: either theatrically (through cinemas), or for home viewing (DVD, Blu-ray, video-on-demand, download, television broadcast);
- Create marketing materials; manage press relations and arrange promotional screenings (such as exhibitor screenings and the premiere) to raise awareness of the film;
- Physically distribute the film to theatres and retail outlets ahead of the film’s release.
