This time last year, Frank Ocean was a talented singer/songwriter known only to the music industry elite. What a difference a year can make. The singer’s mixtape Nostalgia,Ultra was one of the must-listen to releases this year and catapulted the young singer to fame. He would even go on to collaborate with some of the biggest stars in the biz today, putting in star turns on Beyonce’s album ‘4’ and Jay-Z and Kanye West’s ‘Watch The Throne’. It seems even the mainstream press have jumped on the bandwagon with GQ naming Frank Ocean ‘Rookie of The Year’ in their annual Men of The Year issue.
The interview which is now up on the magazine’s website, reveals a little of the enigmatic singer’s off-the-wall personality and also reveals some of the best tips he has received so far. Asked to name the most valuable non-musical advice he received from Kanye West, Ocean singles out some of the Chicago rapper’s fashion advice saying, “You should always choose your sneakers wisely.” As for what he’s learned from Hov, Frank admits that the Brooklyn rapper is not the perfectionist some might think, divulging that Jay would often remind him that “Less takes is sometimes more.”
