It’s known that in some parts of the world, carrying groceries, water, resources or whatever essential items on the head is the norm, particularly in remote areas. However modelling as you do so isn’t so much.
A French photographer has created such a collection, a photo series entitled ‘How Much Can You Carry?’. Floriane de Lassée travelled to seven countries and fifteen regions to document locals with their most important items carried on their heads. Her photo series started in 2012 in Ethopia and comprises of men, women and children carrying as much of their loads with important items as possible. Objects included babies, animals, empty plastic bottles and even footballs.
The photographer said “Leaving misery on the side, the models show a unique sense of curiosity, fun, and pride, in staging themselves, proud to put forward what can be considered in lots of cases as their only survival means.”
Her models were from African countries like Rwanda to countries in other continents including Japan, Brazil and Indonesia. To date de Lassée has photographed 70 people.
