Welcome to the March issue, and we’re in a month in which we try to celebrate women even more than usual! With International Women’s Day on the 8th March, and Mother’s Day rounding off the month on the 31st, it’s a perfect opportunity to celebrate not only our role models in the public sphere, but the women in our lives that have made a difference. From women around the world who are inspiring us, to highlighting women who spend their time making their communities feel more supported, this issue is all about Wonder Women – so this month, some of this issue’s contributors have answered: What makes a Wonder Woman, and who is a Wonder Woman in your eyes? Answers below…
Maysaa Jankara – Editorial Intern
“A Wonder Woman is a woman who is confident in herself, just like my Wonder Woman Beyoncé. I love her style, talent and her strength to persevere. She is driven by her goals and she “grinds till she owns it”. Beyoncé knows her self worth and she also empowers so many around the world.”
Renée Davis – writer, ‘The Giving Women’
“To me, a Wonder Woman is someone who takes risks, and no matter what life has thrown at them, feels the fear and does it anyway. In my eyes, my mum is the ultimate Wonder Woman because despite facing man battles in the past, she’s always bounced back and looks AMAZING while doing so!”
Melissa Cummings-Quarry (left), interviewee and Black Girls Book Club co-founder
“There’s a Wonder Woman in each and every one of us. As Black women we are constantly bombarded with messages that suggest the odds are stacked against us. Sometimes it can feel like simply existing is a revolutionary act. So, whether you are a high flying executive, Michelle, Cardi, Bey, or even if you’re simply at home reading Pride Magazine then in my eyes you’re a Wonder Woman.”
Tula Fazakerley, contributor – ‘Letter to My Younger Self’
“When people ask me who my role model is, the answer is really very simple: my best friend Marina’s mum, Marissa. From a young age I have watched her go to work early every morning as well as bringing up her daughters. She is so humble yet so beautiful and successful. She really leads by example and it has been a privilege and blessing growing up with her.”
