A group of petitions has now attracted over 400,000 signatures demanding that it is now time that the Windrush generation, slave trade and Britain’s true role in Africa and India be taught in our schools. The government has always encouraged schools to focus in GCSE history on Hitler or the Henrys while in English Literature all compulsory papers feature exclusively white authors. This direction was made clear when the Department for Education told schools not to teach ’victim narratives”.
Wow we at Pride are not quite sure how to take that, ”Victim Narratives”, we can not work out whether to be offended or outraged by that reference to our story. What is now clear is that Black students are fed up of seeing their history and the role of Britain in it being airbrushed. It is about time that we as a country can look back and study our darkest moments as well as our victories. Germany has been able to do this surely this country is ready.
