Jamaica better off under British rule?

According to a survey carried out by The Gleaner 60% of Jamaicans believe the country would have been in a better state had it remained under British rule. The survey polled the opinions of 1,000 people out of the 2.7m strong population ahead of the country’s 50th anniversary of independence celebration next year.

Some reasons touted as justification for the responses were that the island suffers from high levels of poverty and crime. The Jamaican Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, is keen for the country to end all official ties with the British monarchy by the 50th anniversary next year but The Gleaner suggests that six out of ten Jamaicans “long for the good old days.”

The island achieved full nationhood on 6 August, 1962.
