The debate as to whether hip-hop should be taken seriously as an art form rages on. Recently however, Empire State of Mind rapper Jay-Z attempted to shed some light on the situation and put the matter to rest once and for all.
In a rare interview, the hip-hop mogul claims this was one of the reasons he wrote his book, Decoded. Speaking on the subject, he said: “I hope readers take away from this book that rap is… it’s poetry. It’s thought-provoking and there’s thought behind it and there’s great writing in rap as well. I mean listen to some of the things Biggie and Rakim wrote. If you take those lyrics and put them up on the wall somewhere and someone had to look at them, they would say ‘This is genious. This is genius work.'”
That settles it then.
