Natalie ‘Flocist’ Stewart and previous one half of Due Floetry opens up her little book of secrets.
Peace Out
I love going to any island that is completely peaceful, so areas of Jamaica, Cayman island, Barbados, St Lucia. Also going to South Africa it was an experience of being on a landmass of such size. Eastern Cape in South Africa– is a really beautiful, natural and peaceful place – it real aligns you with the center of reality and the fact that we are peaceful beings ultimately.
Comedy Central.
I’ve enjoyed the comedy night down at the Hideaway in Streatham which isn’t too far from where I live, its really cool to go down there and have a good laugh. I’m actually looking to open a night of live music in South London in Croydon because we [South Londoner] always have to go so far out for things.
Philly Cheese
I used to live in Philadelphia during my Floetry years and I went back the other day for the first time in years. There is a place called Bistro Bon Marche just off South Street that they make great crepes and Buddakan is amazing restaurant. I used to live on Old City, which is a really bohemian with lots of arts, galleries and things like that.
Dreads
I swear by things that I can pronounce, if I look on the ingredients I like to be able to known what it is, so I use more natural products – I really like Taliah Waajid products on my hair. This is my second set of locs– it’s not as maintained as my first set where every two weeks I’ll have it re-twisted, these one are just doing their own thing.
Book Smart
One of my favourite all time books is the Wild Seeds series by Octavia Butler. About 2004 I realized I’ve read a lot about men, male authors and male experience and I thought none of them have a period, I need to read about people who deal with the type of things I deal with. So I started to read only female authors or female leads, it was a really great journey and Octavia Butler is by far one of my favourite.
