Black female nerds rejoice, Marvel Comics are making waves with their recent announcement that a new black female Ironman will be filling in the shoes of Tony Stark. Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis gave Time Magazine a little more information about the titillating new character “The events at the end of the comic book event series Civil War II will result in Tony Stark stepping out of the Iron Man suit and a new character, Riri Williams, taking over” – “Riri is a science genius who enrols in MIT at the age of 15. She comes to the attention of Tony when she builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm.”
This is a big step for Marvel, who have been in the forefront with representation in both their comics and movies/TV series; with Luke Cage coming to Netflix and the recent announcement of the Black Panther movie, we think it’s high time Marvel add some female essence into the mix! Maybe Riri will eventually get her own movie? Watch this space!
