Message from PM David Cameron to mark Black History Month 2011

“Black History Month has proved over many years to be a unique and valuable celebration of the lives and values of many black and minority ethnic people, reminding us of all the great contribution they have made to our society.

This month remembers the remarkable achievements of many men, women and children who have stood up for freedom, fairness and justice.

By shining a light on their stories, we are able to reveal the vital role those individuals have played in shaping our society.

It is also a rallying cry for the future. We will only create a vibrant and thriving society if we champion what makes us great.

I want to continue to celebrate our diversity and our tolerance, judging people by their contribution while recognising the rich tapestry of our history.

That is why I am supporting Black History month. We must recognise people’s efforts to make society better, learning from our shared past to help build a better future.

I would like to thank the many people who have made this month such a bright and vibrant event.

I wish you all a successful month.”
