Get the weekend started with this week’s hottest new releases!
Nicki Minaj – Megatron
Nicki has dropped a new single accompanied by a music video of which she stars in alongside her boyfriend, Kenneth Petty. In the colourful production Minaj gets close to her boyfriend, relaxing with him in a sauna and pool. The track is her first solo single since she released Queen last year. The song centres on a reference to Transformers antagonist Megatron. The video is hot both in visual and lyrical senses, with steamy scenes and fiery lyrics.
Stormzy – Crown
Ahead of his headline performance at Glastonbury, Stormzy has released his new single, Crown. The track was produced with MJ Cole and Jimmy Napes and is accompanied by live visuals at the iconic Church Studio in London. The song addresses Stormzy’s feeling of pressure to be a role model as his fame increases, and what he has done about it so far. This is a deep and meaningful track, which delves into Stormzy’s emotions and conveys them through rap.
Davido, Django23 and Big Narstie – Control
Davido teams up with rap sensations Django23 and Big Narstie for this bouncing summer song. Having become Nigeria’s biggest rapper to gain success in the United States and subsequently be the leader of Afrobeats in the Billboard charts, Davido has been key in spreading Afrobeats globally. In the music video all three stars get together in a beach setting where they show off their riches and are surrounded by women in bikinis. This song is a catchy one with great summer vibes.
Miraa May – Angles
Proclaimed ‘Tottenham songbird’ Miraa May has released Angles, featuring her friend and collaborator JME. The song is about social media and the fact that we are unable to live without it. The 23-year-old Algerian born artist has become celebrated for her honest, truthful outpourings through her music and candid discussions on various radio shows. May is also set to perform at Glastonbury on 28 June. Listen carefully to this one as it has some important messages about the truth behind social media.
Krept & Konan – Ban Drill
In case you missed it, last week Krept and Konan launched a new single accompanied by a short film with a hard-hitting message that highlights the impact of banning drill on young rappers. Drill came into the spotlight last year when the Met’s top police officer linked the music to an increase in knife crime and violence in London. The rap duo, however, have fought back against this and claimed that music can provide a route out of violence. The video is an eye-opening and important watch with lyrics which back up the message.
Major Lazer – Make It Hot
Just in time for summer, Major Lazer has released their single Make It Hot featuring Brazilian superstar Anitta, in partnership with Bacardi. The song unites Spanish vocals from Anitta with dancehall-inspired sound. The song is accompanied by a vivid animated lyric video, which shows the Major Lazer character reaching spiritual enlightenment. This is definitely one for reggaeton fans to get into the mood for summer.
