‘We called NHS 111 and got the help we needed’: How to make smart medical decisions

Jerry Ofulue and Deborah Brown followed NHS advice and called 111 when they needed urgent non-life-threatening medical help. They discovered that NHS 111 is much more than a helpline. They were able to speak to fully trained advisors who are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and put straight through to relevant healthcare professionals, depending on their situation.

Jerry’s son, aged seven, was at school when he banged heads with another child in the playground. Jerry picked his son up early and took him home to rest.

Jerry said: “After a few hours at home, I became concerned so I called NHS 111. It was very quick and easy to speak with a call handler. They asked me some questions and told me that a nurse would call me back within the hour. The nurse called me back straight away.”

“I was very happy because the service was immediate. Talking to a nurse was reassuring. She advised that I book an appointment with my GP and also gave me some advice about what to do in the meantime. My son did see a GP and he was fine.”

“Having the NHS 111 service is reassuring. I was given advice and signposted to the GP. I felt more confident that taking my son to the GP was the right thing to do.”

Deborah is a receptionist and carer working in and around London. She said “I have called 111 for both myself and people in my care at various times over the last few years. I have to say that I find NHS 111 a very useful service, they have been great in helping me to deal with a wide range of medical concerns, especially when I have been unsure whether to go to the GP or call an ambulance.”

“I called 111 when I had a painful insect bite that lasted over 3 days. I was really concerned about whether I had contracted an infection but the doctor I was transferred to was able to put my mind at rest.”

“I have always experienced very good customer service and would recommend others call NHS 111 for urgent medical concerns.”
