According to the songwriter Mike Stock- one of the men credited for launching Kylie Minogue’s career, female artists these days are proving themselves to have the XXX Factor more than anything else. He singled out popstars like Nicole Scherzinger, Rihanna and Lady Gaga as being among the worst offenders.
Stock believes that as pop artists they “have taken sexualised imagery, dance moves and lyrical content way beyond the limits of decency.” Nicole’s recent performance on the finale of Britain’s Got Talent was deemed too racy for a family show; Lady Gaga is no stranger to controversy and Rihanna was criticised last year after a raunchy, pre-watershed performance on the X Factor UK.
Mike Stock also claims that the raunch-pop movement is lazy and cheap on the part of music execs: “As far as music is concerned, it has been a slow but unmistakable descent into pornography. Why? Because it’s easy. Put some sexualised dancing and scantily-clad females in the video, and get it on the box. Job done.”
