Join in the celebration as the Black Cultural Archives officially opens its doors to the public for the first on Thursday 24th July.
The long awaited building, designed by Pringle Richards Sharratt at a cost of £7 million, is located right in the heart of Brixton’s Windrush Square. The archives are dedicated to Black heritage in Britain and will provide access to a captivating collection of black, culturally important materials and artefacts, while also hosting a number of culturally centred exhibitions including community arts and educational programmes, special events, talks and workshops.
To celebrate the opening, the BCA has planned an entertainment filled day boasting musical performances from the likes of opera diva Shirley Johnson, spoken word from poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, and dance from Breakin’ Convention founder Jonzi D.
Commenting on the opening of the Black Cultural Archives, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said, “I am delighted to be supporting Black Cultural Archives. With a collection that stretches from Roman times to the present day, I hope it will become an important resource for schoolchildren, researchers and scholars, underpinning the role that Black people have played in British history.”
