Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is set to get her very own Oscar. Oprah who retired from her talk show this year after 25 years, will be presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The award, which recognises those who have “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the academy.” The Humanitarian Award, named after the Danish-born actor who helped form the Motion Picture Relief Fund in 1939, is given to an individual “whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.”
Winfrey is as well known for her philanthropy as her media empire. Oprah’s Angel Network is focused on education and human rights while the Oprah Winfrey Foundation supports the inspiration, empowerment and education of women, children, and families around the world.
The award ceremony takes place on November 12.
