Paisley’s Problem Corner: Time to quit my boring job?

TV star, influencer and Agony Aunt Paisley Billings helps out reader Nadia, who is feeling ground down by her unfulfilling job, and is tempted to risk it all and go follow her dreams

The big problem

Hi Paisley,

Hope you’re good. I’ll make this short and sweet: I’m bored. I’m a year and a bit out of uni, and even though I made plans to make it big for myself in the creative sector – like really pushing my photography blog, or starting making YouTube videos – I’ve found myself stuck in an office job that really doesn’t thrill me. Every day feels like a struggle to get out of bed and go to work, because other than money, I can’t find a reason to want to go. I’m thinking of quitting and spending some time figuring out what I want to do, and applying myself to it – but is that stupid? I live at home with my parents, luckily, so I have a safety net, and I’ve saved quite a bit from my last few paydays to last me about two months. Should I keep my boring job to keep some money rolling in, or take some time for me, while I’m young and without big responsibilities. Help please!

Paisley’s advice

Hi Nadia,

The most important thing here is your happiness. Quitting your job because you’re feeling underwhelmed isn’t a stupid idea at all. My first suggestion would be to use some your annual leave and plan ahead for a week of personal projects. Making sure that every single day that you have off you are creating and doing what you love. This will put the fire back in your belly and give you a feeling of purpose when getting up in the morning. My second suggestion is working for another month or two in the job you hate. Just to make sure that safety net doesn’t run out. Then when you hand in your notice, you plan, plan, plan so that when the time comes you know exactly what you are going to be up to. Be careful not to spend loads of time hanging out and not getting stuff done. If you take this leap of faith and trust in yourself it could be the beginning of something so special. But you have to put the work in otherwise you might just end up back where you started. If you do take time out to focus on you also look at doing some work experience in the industry you see yourself in. This could be really helpful in deciding what direction you want to go in with your career. I wish you all the best and remember to dream BIG.

Sending love and light,
Paisley B xxx
