After their recent hard-hitting collaboration ‘Certified’ with Rick Ross racking up a BBC 1Xtra A List and over 300,000 views online, KREPT & KONAN have recruited yet more international players in DJ Mustard and Jeremih for their new single ‘Freak of the Week’ to bring another transatlantic slice of their signature hip hop to the charts. Sampling the Playground Riddim from the legendary ‘Who I Am’, ‘Freak of the Week’ is inspired by dancehall Godfather Beenie Man.
We are in LOVE with this new track. It’s always touchy territory when US and UK artists try their hand at Dancehall inspired sounds, but this track is the perfect hybrid of UK rap and Dancehall rhythm. Krept and Konan steer clear of any awkward faux Jamaican accents and instead throw in a little London Patois for a familiar and welcome edge.
The visuals take the song up a notch with a 90s Hip Hop inspired look; rapping in bright neon lit corridors, rocking heavy gold chains and furs. They even throw a nod to the Dancehall scene with asian dancers, who are known to dominate the dancehall dance scene.
