Dad better have my money! Rihanna sues father for use of Fenty brand name

Rihanna’s been letting the world know that she’s a shrewd businesswoman, and a ‘savage’ for years now. However, it seems as if her own father is the most recent person to learn that, as the singer is suing her father for using their surname for his entertainment business brand.

In a suit that has hit headlines this week, she claims that her father Ronald Fenty has falsely suggested that she is somehow involved with his company ‘Fenty Entertainments’ and feels that it has had a damaging affect on her established ‘Fenty’ brand. The lawsuit says that Mr Fenty and his business partners continued to suggest they were affiliated with the star even after being ‘repeatedly told’ not to use the Fenty name. Rihanna, apparently also said in the lawsuit she filed against her father, that she has used the Fenty name for her cosmetics line and other businesses since 2012.

Fenty is a brand name that if you haven’t heard of; you may have been living under a rock for the past few years. The Barbadian singer slash business owner slash fashion and beauty icon, launched her beauty brand ‘Fenty Beauty’ in 2017, known for its large and diverse range in shade options drawing in people with very light, to much darker skin tones, something not many brands had done before. Many people say that she has helped lay the foundations for a more inclusive makeup industry. It’s claimed that in its first month, Fenty Beauty’s sales were valued at $72 million, rocketing ahead of other high-profile brands such as, Kylie Cosmetics, NYX and Urban Decay. If that weren’t enough of an indicator of success, the brand is said to have also accumulated 132 million views on Fenty-related content on YouTube.

Rihanna has also used the brand name for other ventures such as her collaborations with sports brand, Puma and her own clothing brand ‘Savage X Fenty’.

The 30-year-old, like most stars has a small string of public friendships and relationships and is no stranger to the drama, having previous run-ins with music artists; Chris Brown, Drake and even global social media company, Snapchat.

So until the verdict is released on what is going to happen next, although Rih-Rih asked ‘oh na na what’s my name’, it seems she’d answering her own question. The ‘Work’ singer has made it clear that ‘Fenty’ is and always has been her brand and as long as she has anything to do with it, that’s the way it’ll stay.
