The blogosphere is in overdrive over recent claims that an American employer discriminated against a female staff member as she decided to take a cosmetic free approach. Just last month, the Guardian reported a story about female employees who were told that full-make up was considered part of professional attire.
One of the women, a 24 year old Harrods employee called Melanie, explained that full make-up meant: base, blusher, full eyes (not too heavy), lipstick, lip liner and gloss worn at all times and maintained discreetly so as to take into account the store display lighting which has a ‘washing out’ effect. Melanie maintained that though she came in looking professional and well-groomed at all times, she was sent home on numerous occasions, ordered to work in the stockroom or offered various products to try out.
What do you think? Should make-up to work be obligatory?
