Eyebrow expert Shavata talks about creating the perfect arch.
1 What is this season’s eyebrow shape?
Full and arched is the in shape for autumn/winter 2010–11. Always use natural daylight, as you will make mistakes in artificial light. Use a hand mirror and a big mirror when shaping eyebrows. Start with a hand mirror for close-up plucking, and use a large mirror to look at both brows as you pluck, checking that the eyebrows are even. Eyebrows are twins, not sisters, so never shape them separately. Using a good pair of quality stainless-steel tweezers, pluck a little from both sides, always trying to keep to your natural shape. This way you are less likely to commit the cardinal sin of overplucking. Your eyebrows should start before the eyes, not after, so exercise some restraint. Never pluck above the brow – this is your natural shape, and you should never tweeze this area, as it will never grow back the same. To minimize the pain, try plucking after a hot shower, and avoid plucking during your period.
2 Why are eyebrows so important?
Perfectly shaped eyebrows lift the features and instantly give proportion to the face. This is because an arch creates a lifting effect, and eyebrows create a frame for the face. Like a painting that is well framed, your features will be enhanced if the frame is beautiful and suits your face. Threading is better than waxing, as waxing is less controllable and can often lead to removing too much of the brow.
3 How do you correct overplucking?
Don’t get carried away – it’s vital you know when to stop! Have a look in a large mirror, then take the bulk off first, and go back later to finish off. In other words, pluck in two sittings. Your eyebrows frame your face, and you don’t want to spoil them. If you do go too far, hide your tweezers and let your brows grow out! If you carry on making the same mistake, you are more likely to leave yourself with a permanent gap.
