Positioned in the heart of London’s bustling shopping district, adjacent to renowned landmarks like Selfridges and Hyde Park, The Cumberland Hotel is a treasure trove of surprises. Following its rejuvenation in May 2023, the hotel has not only provided top-notch accommodation but also introduced a new restaurant, two bars, live entertainment, and a private lounge, with a theme setting it apart from other luxury hotels (more on that later).
Our experience at The Cumberland Hotel commenced with a sense of exclusivity, as we were guided through a VIP entrance and granted access to the coveted BACKSTAGE lounge. This secluded area offered comfortable seating and complimentary beverages throughout the day. The staff’s attentiveness and personalised service made us feel truly catered to. This is a nice touch when looking for a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, and a feature to consider when planning your stay.
After a little rest, we were directed to our executive room. Wandering inside the common areas of the hotel gives a clear view of its transformation. The facilities are very modern, but the hotel has a sort of retro vintage feel. Many walls of the hotel (in the lounge, room, or lift corridors) are adorned with artistic and minimalist portraits of British music royalty, as well as Jimmy Hendrick, who, we found out, had his last residence before death registered at the hotel.
When we entered our room, after a few steps in the small corridor separating a stunning dressing room and a modern bathroom equipped with usual amenities, we reached the bedroom where another (Rock)Star welcome awaited. Strawberries, chocolates, Prosecco, fruits, and sweets were beautifully displayed on a table, and the minibar was fully stocked with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. But the fun only started, as we were also pleasantly treated to a stunning Fender Guitar ready to play, as well as a retro record player, equipped with some classic LPs from The Clash, Gorillaz or Kate Bush, to name a few. By that point, we could easily have stayed inside the room for the remaining of the night. But the evening was just starting, and there was more to discover.
After a little fun in the bedroom (reacquainting with our youth on the guitar, what else?), we continued the evening at the SOUND, the hotel’s bar and restaurant, which also hosted exclusive live music entertainment. We sat in one of their comfortable booths overlooking the stage. The food was American-inspired and offered a gorgeous selection of classics, such as burgers and steaks, as well as a decent selection of cocktails. As a reminder that we’re in 2024, we had Robots circulating around the tables to deliver plates (but don’t worry, there are waiters too).
The music act was a rock band, and we were treated to some classics from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. The acoustics were fantastic, and the stage was well-lit, which really elevated the dining experience.
After a short night, we woke up to a little love listening from Kate Bush (courtesy of the Crosley vinyl record player) before finishing our stay in the basement of the hotel, where Breakfast was served in a busy but enjoyable atmosphere. There was a good combination of cold and warm options and comfortably ended our stay.
This is a stunning rebranding of an iconic hotel. The Hard Rock Café spirit has been injected into a very contemporary yet timeless aesthetic, giving it a gentle vintage appeal. It’s genius as it will appeal to the younger crowd, in love with 70-80s technology and vintage merchandising, as well as those who grew up listening to Hendrix and Bowie and now want nothing more than a 5-star experience and a good mattress to finish the day.
