Theatre Of The Soul is how Crying In The Wilderness Productions describe their signature style of evocative drama. Founded by playwright and Artistic Director Paul Anthony Morris, Crying In The Wilderness, who are now a Young Vic Associate Company, present Conundrum, their inaugural production from January 14 to February 4, 2022. “Performing Conundrum will be a great opportunity for new audiences to discover our distinctive style of theatre” says Paul, writer and director “In collaboration with an exciting team of award-winning artists, we are very much looking forward to making our debut production at the Young Vic theatre”.
An intimate tale of self-discovery, liberation and bliss, Conundrum performed by Anthony Ofoegbu, who was seen recently in Inua Ellams’s Barber Shop Chronicles in the UK, US and Canada. Anthony has also worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as in film and television. Diving headlong into Conundrum’s powerful exploration of one man’s trajectory of embracing self-acceptance, Anthony Ofoegbu embodies Fidel, Conundrum’s central character, via his intensive physical and verbal dexterity. He says of this role: “Playing Fidel will be a tremendous undertaking. Not only will it nourish me as an actor, but also we hope, nourish the audience coming to share the experience of his story”.
The complex and gifted Fidel conducts a life review to identify his greatest challenges. Possessing an unusually high IQ and initially critiquing society, Fidel is faced by the possibility that he could also be to some extent, responsible for undermining his own wellbeing. Perplexed by this conundrum, Fidel embarks on a reflective journey seeking answers to some of life’s most relatable questions: Who am I and why am I here?
Kwame Kwei-Armah Artistic Director of the Young Vic invited Crying In The Wilderness Productions to join the organisation as an Associate Company. Says Kwame: “I am delighted that Crying in the Wilderness Productions are finally getting to bring their debut piece to our stage, having been delayed by the pandemic. The show’s introspective and philosophical nature asks urgent questions that we as a country are grappling with – arguably more than ever before”.
