It is common for people of all genders and ages to go through bouts of low self-esteem. Traversing this tough time can feel impossible as you may not know how to get out of the rut.
You need to find things that work for you. This may take some trial and error, but you will get back to loving yourself again. Here are some tips to help enhance your self-confidence and self-love.
Practice positive self-talk
Negative thoughts can ruin your day. You may have a little voice that tells you that you’re unattractive or unsuccessful. Although it can be hard, finding ways to ignore those voices will help you to go about your day with confidence.
Start by practising positive self-talk. This does look different for everyone, so find what works for you. You may want to start adding in daily affirmations which reinforce how you want to feel about yourself. You can then draw on these mantras for when the negative thoughts get a bit louder and harder to ignore.
Set achievable personal goals
Having big dreams isn’t a bad thing. Finding something to focus on in your personal life can give you a drive and a reason to keep hustling.
Sometimes, that large dream can feel a touch out of reach, though. Try setting smaller goals which are still working towards that big goal. Achieving these will give you a sense of pride and motivation to keep going. Don’t forget to allow yourself time to celebrate those small victories as they are just as important.
Find things that bring you joy
Life is too short to solely focus on work. Make a conscious effort to carve out time for yourself and fill it with things that bring you joy. If you don’t already have one, find a hobby to enjoy. You could try something social like a pottery class but if you prefer your own company, why not make time for reading?
Finding activities that spark joy doesn’t have to be at set times or in large gestures. Simple things such as dressing well can help you to feel amazing when you leave the house. Treating yourself to a luxury bra, for example, can make you walk taller and feel like the person you were meant to be.
Maintain physical wellbeing
There is a proven link between physical health and self-confidence. Exercise comes in many forms so there is something out there for everyone.
Classic sports include football, rugby or swimming. Many clubs do taster sessions which are a great way to ease yourself in without committing if you don’t like it.
It is worth remembering that you don’t have to engage in team sports or even go to the gym to get exercise. You can simply go for a walk somewhere beautiful and enjoy nature as you get your body moving.
Surround yourself with positivity
Going through life with negative social influences can have a detrimental impact on your own wellbeing. Toxic “friends” aren’t really friends at all if they make you feel rubbish about yourself.
Although it is hard, start to distance yourself from anyone who doesn’t support you and lift you up. This doesn’t mean you have to cut contact completely, more that you limit your exposure to them.
Focus on nurturing any positive relationships you have. If you don’t have many, try to engage with local social groups with similar hobbies, for example. You never know, your future best friend may be waiting at that pottery class.
