Two of the most popular music genres were included today among the 200 new entries into the English dictionary. In the new edition of the Chambers dictionary, Dubstep is defined as a “type of electronic popular dance music developed from drum and bass” and Grime is given the definition of “a style of popular music combining elements of dance hall and hip hop”.
Both types of music have come a long way from the underground origins achieving mainstream success and exposure over the last 18 months. Some of the music industry’s most recent success stories, acts like Wretch 32, Katy B and Magnetic Man make music that fit in to these categories.
Robert Williams, commissioning editor of the Chambers dictionary, said: “Chambers only includes words that are here to stay and these music styles have proved that they are.”
